Rise of the Bots: What Not to Tell AI

From customer service to streamlining work document creation, generative AI tools are becoming more common in business and personal lives. These bots are designed to make tasks easier, but users may have concerns about privacy, safety and responsible use.

Whether you’re using an AI tool or dealing with a customer service chatbot, here are five things you should never share with AI:

  1. Personally Identifiable Information

Avoid sharing your full name, address, Social Security number, banking or credit card details with any AI tool.

  2. Medical Records and Health Data

Your information is protected within health institutions under privacy laws. While healthcare providers may be regulated to ensure they comply with your privacy, AI tools are under no such oversight. Don’t share your medical and health information. Also, remember AI tools are not doctors and may give inaccurate information. Don’t seek medical advice from them.

  3. Passwords or Login Credentials

Never input sensitive information into a chatbot that could compromise the security of your online login credentials.

  4. Confidential Business Information

Proprietary data, business contracts, client info and internal communications should not be shared with any external AI tool. If your company provides tools within a secure, enterprise-grade AI system, follow company policies and the recommended best practices to help ensure safe use.

  5. Legal Documents

Legal documents could be misinterpreted or mishandled by AI tools. Such documents often contain sensitive personal information that you may not want leaked. You should also avoid relying on AI tools for legal advice. They may give you bad or inaccurate information.

By understanding the limitations of AI tools and using them responsibly, you can enjoy their positive effects without putting your privacy at risk.
